| An
increasing number of people are hiring personal coaches to assist them
in meeting their goals and getting the results they want in their lives.
Whether one is a coach, or considering hiring a coach, one of the
key questions to be answered is,
“What
are the benefits of hiring a coach?”
In my recent doctoral research study, “Personal Coaching for
Professional Women”, this question is answered from the perspective of
the professional (working) women who have been coached for four or more
months by an International Coach Federation (ICF) Master Certified Coach
(MCC) or Professional Certified Coach (PCC).
Specifically,
this study asked the questions, (1) “What are common reasons
professional women hire a coach?, (2) “What goals and benefits do they
perceive they have achieved as a result of the coaching experience?”,
and (3) What factors in the coaching experience contributed to the
achievement of desired goals?”. A
second purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which the
data supports the findings in the recent research study conducted by Dr.
Brenda Wilkins (Wilkins, 2000).
Findings
Data
analysis in my research study supported the Wilkins’ Coaching Model
which utilized as its main constructs Purpose,
Relationship, and Process and the interaction of these constructs
toward the common goal of seeking to develop the client to the fullest
potential. Analysis of data also revealed the the emergence of an
additional phenomenon that this researcher calls the Transformational
Coaching Experience. Coaching clients interviewed validated
that when all components of the Coaching Model are present and
operational, the interaction of these components contribute to
noticeable change or transformation in their lives. The findings
of my study validate coaching as a powerful facilitator of learning and
change, and as a significant resource for professional women and others
seeking to develop themselves to their fullest potential.

this study as well as a link to the names of professional women coaching
clients who participated in this study and the Master Certified Coaches

to be interviewed.
I
wish to take this opportunity to express my deepest respect and
gratitude to each of these people as well as Dr. Brenda Wilkins and Dr.
Susan Hughey-Rasler who mentored me throughout my research study. |
